DIY Modern Floral Hair Comb

DIY Modern Floral Hair Comb // Design Sponge

I’ve been a longtime fan of flower hair combs, and I’ve got to say, it’s nearly impossible to have a bad day when you’re wearing flowers in your hair. This year, I’m giving my favorite hair accessory a refresh with a modern twist on the classic hair comb.

I’m stepping outside the flower section and including some of my favorite plants like succulents and Tillandsia. Then, for a geometric pop, I’m adding some delicate copper shapes to the mix. I hope this is the year you discover wearing flowers in your hair is indeed for the cool kids. —Gwendolyn

Supplies

  • Hair comb (I find the plastic kind easier to wear, but any will work)
  • Floral wire
  • Brass wire
  • Succulents
  • Tillandsia
  • Flowers

Step 1: Begin by choosing which flower you want to build your hair comb around. I went with hardy Bachelor Buttons and just couldn’t resist this gorgeous crop of pink Ranunculus. Using a sharp pair of shears, carefully cut the blooms you’d like to use at the base of the stem.

Step 2: Once you have a focal point chosen, it’s time to pair it with one of your succulents. I just love how the pink tips of the Echeveria really off set the blue of the Bachelor Buttons (don’t worry if some of the outer leaves have blemishes; you can remove them during assembly).

Step 3: The last ingredient of your modern floral hair comb is a Tillandsia. There are quite a few types of air plants to choose from — I went with a more dramatic, spiky variety for this one, but you could use smaller, more delicate kinds, too.

Step 4: Assemble! Start by cutting a short length of floral wire and piercing your air plant through the base. Next, start wrapping the wire through the prongs of the hair comb until securely fixed in place.

Add on your flower and continue wrapping the wire around the comb. Once you’re happy with the floral elements, cut any excess floral wire and tuck the end through the base of your succulent.

Step 5: For the finishing touch, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to bend the copper wire into delicate shapes. I went with simple forms like squiggles and hexagons, but you can get as intricate (or simple) as you’d like. Once complete, just leave a little extra room in the wire and secure to the hair comb (but wrapping around your flowers).

That’s all there is to it! I hope these fun flower hair combs blossom into your favorite look.
