if you know me, you know i love anything surf-related. having grown up in the san fernando valley and trekking my way to malibu, zuma and santa monica as often as i possibly could, it would be hard to imagine surfing not making some kind of impression on me. i love the vibe, the sport and the whole culture of surfing. which is why i love this new book, surf site tin type by joni sternbach. over the past decade Brooklyn-based photographer Joni Sternbach has traveled around the world from Montauk to Malibu; Byron Bay, australia to cornwall, england creating tintype portraits of today’s contemporary surfers using the nineteenth-century wet-plate collodion process. these one-of-a-kind images evoke the romance and adventure of surfing that i love, and the unique individualism of the men and women who live to ride the waves. surf site tin type is coming to my coffee table soon!
